Swimming Competency
Year 6 Swimming Competency
Percentage of pupils within our 2023-24 Year 6 (9 children in September 2023) cohort that can do each of the following:
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres: 56%
- Use a range of strokes effectively: 56%
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations: 11%
Schools can choose to use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to provide additional provision for swimming, but this must be for activity over and above the national curriculum requirements. This year, children in Year 5 and 6 enjoyed a water sports day of kayaking and paddleboarding as part of a residential trip to the Mendips. This was paid for using the Sport Premium money.
During the last few years children at Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls Primary School have attended swimming lessons usually within Year 6 (or until swimming competency has been achieved). Prior to the pandemic swimming lessons were provided for Year 3 and 4. As normal patterns of swimming could not be followed during the pandemic, this process of ‘catch-up’ swimming for Year 5 and 6 will be repeated for this and future years until more swimming teaching capacity can be created to allow Year 5, 6 and 3, 4 to swim in the same academic year. This year’s data refers to Year 6 pupils who went swimming at Five Rivers Meet Leisure Centre in Salisbury during Term 6 of 2023/24. Percentages are lower this year than usual due to swimming pool closures and mobility within the year group during the year.
